⇒ unexpectedly and without an obvious reason:

- for no reason (at all <whatsoever>);

- for no good (apparent) reason;

- without any reason at all;

- without rhyme or reason;

- [in limited contexts](suddenly <just>) out of the blue;

- [in refer, to saying sth. only] apropos of nothing.

     ♦ "Асеев очень сложный человек. Уже здесь в Чистополе он недавно ни с того ни с сего оскорбил меня и даже вынудил жаловаться на него Федину" (Гладков 1). "Aseyev is a very complex man. A little while ago, here in Chistopol, he insulted me for no reason at all, and even forced me to complain to Fedin about him" (1a).

     ♦ Ни с того ни с сего у поворота перегона Петушки-Роща один за другим стали сходить с полотна паровозы (Максимов 3). For no apparent reason, engines had started leaving the tracks at a bend on the Petushki-Roshcha run (3a).

     ♦ Николай терпеливо выслушал учительницу, а потом бухнул ни с того ни с сего: "Слышь, Марь Иванна, а Тимофей-то мне проспорил поллитру [ungrammat = пол-литра]" (Войнович 5). Nikolai patiently heard the teacher out and then blurted out, apropos of nothing: "Listen, Marya Ivanna, I've just won half a liter from Timofei on a bet" (5a).

     ♦ "Да как же это я вдруг, ни с того ни с сего, [перееду] на Выборгскую сторону..." (Гончаров 1). "But how can I suddenly, without rhyme or reason, move to the VY'sorg district?" (1b).

     ♦ Ольга Петровна собиралась зайти к мадам Кипарисовой и всё не могла собраться. Времени не было, да и неловко как-то. Она не видела Кипарисову года три уже. Как это она ни с того ни с сего вдруг зайдёт? (Чуковская 1). Olga Petrovna intended to call on Mrs. Kiparisova, but couldn't bring herself to. There was no time, and anyway it was a bit awkward. She hadn't seen Mrs. Kiparisova for about three years. She couldn't very well suddenly go and visit her, out of the blue (1a).
